Greek MP Nikos Papadopoulos allegedly tore four framed works by Christophoros Katsadiotis from the walls of an Athens exhibition, shattering their glass, objecting to depictions he considered blasphemous.
Most politicians hold press conferences. In March 2025 one reportedly chose a different approach. Visiting an exhibition titled 'The Allure of the Bizarre', which reinterpreted religious imagery, the MP objected to what he saw as blasphemous treatments of Christian icons and pulled four framed pieces to the floor.
The attack ignited a national debate over censorship, religion, artistic freedom and whether elected officials should ever take direct action against art they find offensive. Sometimes the loudest art criticism isn't written — it arrives with broken glass.
