Founded in 1683, the Ashmolean is the world's first university museum. On New Year's Eve 1999, as Oxford celebrated the millennium, a thief used the cover of fireworks and a smoke canister to steal Paul Cézanne's 'Auvers-sur-Oise' through a skylight. The small landscape has never been recovered.
