One of the largest art museums in the United States, the Brooklyn Museum became a culture-war flashpoint in 1999 when its 'Sensation' exhibition featured Chris Ofili's 'The Holy Virgin Mary,' which incorporated elephant dung. Mayor Rudy Giuliani tried to cut the museum's funding, prompting a First Amendment lawsuit the museum won.
