In 1990, the Contemporary Arts Center and its director Dennis Barrie were indicted on obscenity charges for exhibiting Robert Mapplethorpe's 'The Perfect Moment.' The trial — the first time an American art museum faced criminal prosecution over an exhibition — ended in acquittal and became a landmark in the fight over artistic freedom and public funding.
