Opened in 1817, Dulwich Picture Gallery was England's first purpose-built public gallery. It suffered a spate of thefts in the 1960s, and its small Rembrandt portrait 'Jacob de Gheyn III' became known as the 'Takeaway Rembrandt' after being stolen four times between 1966 and 1983 — always recovered.
