Norway's principal collection of art until its holdings moved to the National Museum, the National Gallery in Oslo housed Edvard Munch's most famous works. On the opening day of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, thieves propped a ladder against the facade, climbed through a window, and lifted 'The Scream' in under a minute, leaving a note that read 'Thanks for the poor security.' The painting was recovered months later in a sting operation.
