National Museum of Iraq

Home to artifacts spanning thousands of years of Mesopotamian history, the National Museum of Iraq was ransacked in April 2003 as U.S. forces entered Baghdad. Around 15,000 objects were stolen in a matter of days; the loss became a symbol of the failure to protect cultural heritage in wartime. Thousands of pieces have since been recovered.
