The Kunsthal Rotterdam Heist
Seven masterpieces, and an oven in Romania

In a two-minute raid in 2012, thieves took seven works — by Picasso, Monet, Matisse, Gauguin and Freud — from the Kunsthal. The mother of one suspect later claimed she burned them.
The Romanian thieves exploited the Kunsthal's open-plan design and thin overnight security. When arrests followed, the paintings had already left the country.
The mother of one of the accused told investigators she had buried and then incinerated the canvases in her stove to protect her son; forensic analysis of ash found pigments and nails consistent with old paintings. Whether all seven were truly destroyed remains uncertain — and haunting.
