Museum lore is full of them — the boy in Taipei who tripped and put his fist through a $1.5 million still life, the toddlers who treat abstract canvases as finger-paint invitations. Modern and abstract works, with their large flat fields, seem to attract small hands the way magnets attract iron filings.
Conservators can often close a puncture invisibly, but the curator's heart rate rarely recovers as quickly as the canvas. The moral, endlessly relearned: rope lines exist for a reason, and children move faster than physics.
