During an adult education class at the Met, a woman lost her balance and fell directly into Picasso's 'The Actor', opening a six-inch tear in the lower canvas.

It is one thing to be moved by a painting; it is another to fall into one. The 1904–05 Rose Period masterpiece, valued well into eight figures, suffered a vertical tear when a class participant stumbled against it.

The Met's conservators repaired the damage so skillfully that the painting returned to view with the injury all but invisible. The incident is now a fixture of every 'please don't touch the art' briefing.
