Weeks after King Charles III's official portrait was unveiled, two activists pasted an image of Wallace over the King's face and a speech bubble reading 'No cheese, Gromit. Look at all this cruelty on RSPCA farms!'
In June 2024 the freshly unveiled royal portrait became the target of an unusual animal-rights protest. One poster covered the King's face with the cheese-loving inventor from 'Wallace & Gromit'; another added the cartoon speech bubble, criticising RSPCA-certified farming standards.
Because the materials were stuck to the protective surface, the portrait was undamaged. It may have been one of the few occasions in British history when a reigning monarch was briefly, and cheerfully, replaced by a claymation character.
