A protester from Last Generation Canada threw bright pink paint toward Helen McNicoll's 'Sunny September', declaring the aim was not to destroy art but to protect the future it represents.
In June 2025 the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts became the latest battleground in the debate over climate activism in galleries. The action was carefully documented and shared online, the paint arriving as much for the cameras as for the canvas.
Staff secured the gallery and conservators examined the work, which escaped lasting harm. Like many recent museum protests, the real target was never the painting — it was public attention, borrowed from a gentle scene of Edwardian summer.
